Database structure

Several of the IsoMemo partners have made available their data in online databases often through user friendly graphical interfaces. For those partners that have created large repositories and wish to make this available online the IsoMemo initiate has also implemented an online database and user friendly graphical interfaces. 

The IsoMemo database  follows a structure (see figure below) that allows for simple definition/implementation processes, therefore it is extremely flexible. The database is divided into a series of tables defined by the different isotope data user communities. Each table is organized into thematic sub-tables that group the different fields. These sub-tables do not have a physical implementation within the database but can be readily upgraded to a more efficient and faster querying once the advanced user-interface is implemented. Each table is linked through a key field to a user table that stores the information of the data submitter.

The current structure of the database implies that the relational model is not being fully explored and that will be some degree of data redundancy. However, the simplicity of the database, namely the organization of the tables into sub-tables will allow relational or even hierarchical models can be effortlessly implemented in the future. Data redundancy is not expected to have an impact on the performance of the database since this is implemented in a high performance server using MySQL. MySQL is a relational database management system tested on databases with dimensions that are several orders of magnitude larger than that anticipated for IsoMemo.com.
